Our History
In 1963, a group of senior citizens and local community leaders met for a potluck lunch at the First United Methodist Church of Clarksville to begin what was to become one of the first three senior centers established in the State of Tennessee.
Officially chartered in 1965, the Ajax Turner Senior Citizens Center became a focal point for those aged 50 and above in Clarksville, Tennessee, and its surrounding areas.
Our center was originally founded in what is now the white building at the corner of Crossland Avenue and Pagent Lane. In 1983, the center moved to it’s current location at 953 Clark Street. From the very beginning, our primary and fundamental mission has been to provide senior citizens in Montgomery County and surrounding areas with programs and services that can enhance their quality of life. These opportunities include exercise, education, arts and crafts, social interaction, low-cost meals, recreation, an adult day center, telephone reassurance, resource information, and many free health screenings.
We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization funded in part by city, state, federal, and United Way funds, as well as income-based fees, fundraisers, grants, and donations. The Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability provides monitoring of operations, programs, and finances.
